We need to write something convincing about why someone should join the SDCOS – this page is all about how to.
Local information, meeting local growers incl. mentorship, help watering plants while on vacation, see local collections.
Maybe some testimonials?
I can write one but it seems self-serving plus it’s date since I have been a member for so long. I will see if Rachel Burns will write one or that new member (tall, skinny, long hair, pale skin – he alwasy raves about us).
Join our Society!
Old: We are one of the largest orchid groups affiliated with the American Orchid Society. We feature monthly programs with entertaining, informative speakers and culture classes.
The public is welcome to join us on the first Tuesday of every month (except May and December) at Casa del Prado in Balboa Park. Admission is free – just bring your interest in orchids! Each first Tuesday meeting includes a mini-show: your opportunity to share a stunning bloom which wasn’t ready for the previous show.
Other Society activities include quarterly orchid shows, funding support for orchid conservation programs, a species study group, plant opportunities, and orchid tours to special growers or neighboring orchid events. We maintain a large orchid reference library which members are welcome to use. Our spectacular Annual Spring Orchid Show gives you a chance to show off your beautiful bloomers. The SDCOS offers many opportunities to get more involved with orchids. We encourage you to become an active member and join the fun.
New: As one of the largest orchid societies affiliated with the American Orchid Society, the SDCOS offers abundant opportunities to immerse yourself in the world of orchids. We invite you to become an active member and embrace the excitement.
Our monthly meetings, held at Casa del Prado in Balboa Park on the first Tuesday of each month, feature engaging presentations by knowledgeable speakers and culture classes for beginners. Attendees also have the chance to participate in our mini-show, where they can showcase their stunning blooms that were not ready for the previous show.
For those looking to expand their orchid collection, our plant opportunity table offers locally grown orchids at budget-friendly prices. Our members also sell plants and are always eager to assist and provide valuable local culture advice. Additionally, we provide potting supplies for sale during each meeting, eliminating the need for an extra trip to purchase them.
Engagement is at the core of our society, with our involvement in various activities. These include quarterly orchid shows, support for orchid conservation programs, a dedicated species study group, plant opportunities, organized tours to local growers and events and camp-outs to observe local orchids in their habitat.
Moreover, we boast a well-stocked orchid reference library exclusively accessible to our members.
Make sure to mark your calendar for our magnificent Orchid Show and Sale Events in Balboa Park. They are the perfect opportunity to proudly display your blooming orchids and expand your collection through new plant acquisitions.
The single membership fee is $20 per year, a dual (couples) membership is $25 per year.
